part of a small team responsible for creating and producing innovative segments on cnn international. worked closely with producer jessica ellis and correspondent errol barnett. involved in a cross-platform approach to news that included signature webcam interviews allowing for direct interaction with the online world. showcased the most compelling videos, pictures and stories generated by users online – from cnn’s public journalism initiative on ireport.com and other social/media sites (i.e. various national and international blogs, youtube, facebook, flickr, twitter). part of a new wave bringing new technologies into the cnni newsroom and enhancing the way news is covered – from breaking news to the entertaining, engaging with viewers, and connecting with audience through user-generated initiatives. worked in the cnn international newsroom, but also did live hits on cnn usa and cnn.com live. was part of the production process – researching, writing, shooting and editing pre-produced segments and the program “ireport for cnn.”

spent a few weeks with the row – the researching, fact-checking, and editing unit of cnn. the row approves every script before publication through any venue. researchers take a first look at the work, doing a complete review and fact-check. pieces and their revisions are then sent to an executive producer for a second review and more critical edit often with researcher and reporter involved. once approved by the row, the content is ready for air.

carolina week is an emmy-awarding winning television newscast produced by students in the unc-ch school of journalism and mass communication. students are responsible for the creation of the stories aired as well as the production of the show. supervised by a team of professors and graduate students with professional broadcast experience, students shoot, write and edit their stories. the program gives students hands-on experience in the broadcast journalism field. reporters cover university, community and state news for two tv newscasts and one radio newscast per week. each half hour tv newscast includes news, weather and sports segments. a minimum of 20 hours per week was spent covering stories, editing, running the studio and control room, and many other tasks. three stories were produced for carolina connection, the radio counterpart. kate was the only reporter to cover the obama inauguration in dc for carolina week.

on-air personality for a sports show that kicks off weekend coverage of unc football. conducted player interviews and interviews with high-ranking members of the university live at the show. hosted trivia contests each week, interviewed people in the crowd, made game predictions, spoke with writers from the daily tar heel (one segment) and spoke with other athletic teams from the university of north carolina (one segment).
